The Environmental Inspectorate exercises supervision in all areas of environmental protection, such as forest and mineral resources, the protection of fisheries, waste management, packaging, ambient air issues etc, altogether 20 areas of supervision.
Environmental supervision in Estonia is separated from environmental management protection. The organisational side is dealt with by the Ministry of the Environment and the Environmental Board (i.e environmental permits).
The Environmental Inspectorate is comprised of its centre located in Pärnu and 15 county offices.
Day to day environmental supervision is carried out by county offices.
The Nature conservation department, the Environmental protection department and the Fisheries protection department coordinate the main activities of the Environmental Inspectorate. The Investigation Department conducts criminal procedures.
Support services are provided by legal, personnel, analysis and planning department in the centre.
